The ego or identity is an illusion to keep us separate from our Source, Creator, God. Our true selves are one with all of creation. Within the universe, there is a scale; at one end is God and at the other end is darkness or the total absence of God. On our first incarnation ever, we did not have an ego, we were completely connected to our Source. Once the thoughts of doubt and fear were first introduced to us, our ego was born, along with our separation from God. This can be illustrated by the story of the garden of Eden, the eating of the apple represents the introduction of the thought of fear, the fear that God was withholidng something from Adam and Eve. Our soul is a carrier, it moves between these two spectrums of the scale, the more egotistical paradigms we carry, the closer we move to the dark side of the scale and separation from God. The more we follow our intuition, the closer we move toward unity with God.
Our purpose when we incarnate on earth is to be an expression of the Light, so our task is to reject the egotistical paradigms the dark side actively imprints on us, and thus move toward the Light and eternal life with the Source. The dark requires more darkness to survive and thus there is a struggle for our soul and what position it holds on the scale, but God requires nothing from us and therefore does not impose anything on us, we are free to choose. The ego represents the negative programming from the dark side, because before we are conscious of the dark side, we have no ego. Our soul's position on this scale will reflect in our expression, either expression of the Light, aligned with God's will or an expression of the dark, separated from God.
